I fell headlong into mermaid illustration, thanks to the MerMay drawing challenge. It was a great chance to experiment with fantastical character creation.

Character concept

Half the fun of challenges is thinking up original character concepts. This ‘Racer Mermaid’ is more concerned with winning gold than tempting sailors off rocks.

Watercolours

I like to use watercolours for mermaids, as they give the illustrations naturally fluid patterns.

Storytelling

There’s a story behind most of my illustrations - and I love giving things a Tim Burton-esque twist.
